Waiting to Fly

Colourful hot-air balloons fill a starry night sky over a city in this original painting.

Story: I remember when I would sit at the window with my face pressed up against the glass, watching the hot-air balloons as they filled the night sky with colours. I dreamed of what it might be like to travel in one of those baskets, to have an adventure of my own. Everyone told me that my turn would come, that I should be patient, that it wasn't yet my time. But I didn't listen. I couldn't. I was angry and frustrated and, yes, jealous. Why was I stuck inside when so many others got the chance to fly? Tonight I let go of all that. I didn't venture near the window. I decided I'd find other ways to make progress in life – and obsessing about what others were up to would just waste precious time. Maybe that was what made me ready. All I know is that at midnight, my balloon arrived. It was big and bright and beautiful. Finally, I'm going to fly.
