The Lapdog of a Lady

An Edwardian lady looks off into the distance while her dog looks up at her reproachfully. Original painting.

Story: Would you please pay attention to me, just for a moment? I know he's a fine figure of a man, but you really oughtn't to stare. It's embarrassing. And unseemly. Really, it's not becoming at all. And I've always been proud to be considered to be the lapdog of a lady. So please conduct yourself demurely, serenely and properly, if only for the sake of my reputation. In any case, I'm quite sure that the very moment you indicate that you care not a jot for him, you'll pique his interest!
