One Night

Original painting of a woman viewed from the back as she adjusts her floor-length gown.

Story: I slip into the dress carefully, slowly adjusting the straps and savouring the sensation of silk against my skin. It's the perfect gown for me. The fabric shimmers in the light like the scales of a mermaid's tail, turning from white to coral to peach to aqua and back again as I move. And for the first time in a long time, I feel beautiful again, like a princess from the pages of a fairytale. The doubts and fears that have been my companions fall away, and I decide that for tonight, at least, I shall let myself live out one of my childhood dreams. After all, there'll be a castle, and I'm all dressed up for the ball. It's one night. But maybe it can be the start of something more.
