Caterpillar

Original painting of a dark-haired woman in a floor-length dress against a black background featuring white butterflies.

Story: I was supposed to be the girl least likely, the one who'd never amount to much, just another also-ran. But I had faith in myself when others didn't, and I knew how to keep my head down and work hard. I progressed slowly, carefully, quietly, no fanfare. But now, at last, I've been noticed. My triumph has been called an upset victory, but I don't see it that way. I always knew I was destined to be a butterfly. Don't look so surprised! Didn't you know? That's just what happens to caterpillars.
