Wherever You May Go

A ballerina sits on stone steps reading a letter, a friend at either side.

Story: She has known for a while that she will be leaving, knew since she received the phone call inviting her to join the Company and giddily accepted their offer, the stuff her dreams were made of. But somehow it is only when the letter arrives, a formal confirmation, that the facts of her imminent departure and a life far from the familiar walls of the Academy become real to her.

The words gradually blur on the paper before her, and she does not see them join her on the cold stone steps. But suddenly the touch of reassuring hands. Her two best friends, who know what this is about without reading a single word.

They don't have to say anything, because they know, for this is part of the life of a ballerina, a fate they have adopted as their own. So they just sit down beside her, their presence a wordless announcement of what she already knows: friends like these are there for you, wherever you may go.
