Breakout Ballerina

Painting of a ballerina pulled out of a line of dancers to audition.

Story: There are those moments when you know something important is happening, but you have no time to fully experience it. When you look back on it, hear about it, talk about it, you'll find that others saw it in slow motion whilst you, in the midst of it, felt it in fast forward. That's how it was on that stage the afternoon I was pulled out of the line of dancers to give the audition of a lifetime. I can remember small things: the slow pace of the director's applause at the end, while my heart was still racing; my hand rising to the red ribbon that came loose from my bun. But perhaps that's the story of every breakout performance, of every breakout ballerina.
